The Australian Model Ship Society (AMSS) formed in 1984, is a Perth, Western Australian, based group of marine hobby enthusiasts. Our members have fully operational radio controlled yachts, steamboats and powerboats, either working scale models or built specifically for racing. Others have static models, “stand off” or near scale models and some have interesting models of marine engines and ships. We have some highly gifted members who are experienced in metal working and machining whose skills have been used in the building of operational marine steam engines and boiler plant. On days suited to this type of watercraft a variety of steam driven models may be seen plying our sailing waters.

Competitions

Competitions for both sail and powered craft are held monthly. Yachts compete in classes and on courses that replicate racing for full-scale craft. Power boats compete in “Steering” of navigation competitions that the competence of owners in sailing a prescribe course, points being lost for navigation errors or inconsistency in elapsed times. Prizes and trophies are awarded at our Annual Prize Ceremony to successful competitors. Scheduled events to other clubs are available to experienced competitors.

Our Club presents a number of exhibitions and public displays during the year. Members are invited to display and operate their models at several public functions and venues around Perth. A significant event on our calendar is the Annual British Car Day at Gingin (80km north of Perth), to which the AMSS has been invited for a number of years as an independent exhibitor. Club members with suitable models are encouraged to attend and exhibit their work.
